Facebook has long been the leader in the social media race over the last several years. It’s not the only game in town, though. We have seen the introduction and growth of several other sites such as Twitter, Pinterest, Snapchat, Instagram, Linkedin and WhatsApp.
In a brand new study done by the Pew Research Center, it was discovered that Facebook is used by about two thirds of U.S. Adults 18 and over. And that nearly three quarters of them access Facebook every single day.
A couple years ago a new player entered the field of competition...Snapchat.
I remember listening to a couple podcasters say that Snapchat would indeed become King of Social Media.
They have recently been in the news because they changed the User Interface that, well, let’s say upset, hmm...quite a few people.
Was this just a media ploy on their part?
You know what they say that even bad news is better than no news. We’ll have to see if they are able to catch up to Facebook, but in this study, it was found that only about 27% of U.S. Adults are actually using Snapchat.
Right on the heels of Snapchat are Linkedin, Twitter and Whatsapp.
although I don’t have an account, Pinterest has garnered a 29% share of the Adult market. Even though there are many people out there these days who say there’s not any differences between the sexes, only 16% of adult men use Pinterest compared to 41% of adult women.
Now...If you are watching this and thinking to yourself, this just doesn’t seem right, you may just be a bit younger than the average American.
Because you see, those in the age range of 18-24 have just a little bit different experience with today’s social media.
It was found that 45% of those in this age group use Twitter compared to the overall 24% of adults 18 and over.
The differences don’t stop there, as 71% of 18-24 year olds say they use Instagram, and a whopping 78% of them use Snapchat,
and about 71% of the Snapchatters are visiting Snapchat multiple times a day.
So… If you were wondering why all the young people are glued to their devices, well, it looks like they are Snapchatting….every day….maybe even all day! And when they are not on SnapChat they are sharing, live streaming, or messaging on Instagram.
You may be watching this video on YouTube, and although YouTube is not your typical social media site, they have been working hard to adopt the popular aspects of Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat.
When you consider that 73% of adults over 18 and a gigantically huge 94% of 18-24 year olds are using YouTube, it is clear who the winner really is.
Perhaps though, the big winners are adults over the age of 65, who only have a 37% social media use of any kind. Maybe they just haven’t bought into the craze, or maybe, …..
just maybe wisdom does indeed come with age, and they really do know what is most important in life.
I want to sincerely thank you for watching! I would really be interested in finding out your social media preferences, so take a moment to let everyone know in the comments where you spend your social media time.
